Thanks Dawn, for starting the reflections and yes you are right. There are no failures, only feedback. Thus, we need to work on our ” feedbacks ” and make out presentation better !

Firstly, i think we did well explaining our process of the documentary, thus, i just want to say Congrats. However, i think we need to do better, in our presentation skills, for example, we should speak louder, clearer and not too fast. I think some of us lack this presentation skills.

We also did not do well as we did not edited our documentary when Ms Lim had commented that time. I think we should have edited it, but, because of lack of time and no more time to edit the video, we cannot really blame anyone, thus, next time, we should have finish our task earlier and so, can edit faster and let Ms Lim comment faster. Thus, this is a mistake, we should learn from.

Another reason we did not do well is because we lack of teamwork and time management. We lack of teamwork, as some of us prefer to do things their way and do not share their notes or opinions with other mates. We should not do this as this is a PROJECT WORK. Project means doing things with more than one people. Thus, i hope that those that you think you are not acting as a group, please buck up, and share your ideas with mates.

Time management is a problem that happens in all groups. It is something we cannot avoid. But, we can make it better and plan our time well. We should also finish all our tasks well, and also post frequent posts to keep this blog active and not dead.

Thus, starting from today onwards, I hope we can avoid this problems that we have. Members, please cooperate with me. If you have any inquiries please comment, if not, thank you. (:

After watching alot of groups that had presented, I noticed that they had made some mistakes. Some examples are they did not make eye-contact with the audience, they also lack of teamwork and they do not have enough interaction with each other. Therefore, they are not so confident to explain to us what their topic they are presenting is all about. They also read their scripts to themselves very softly, thus we cannot hear their explanation well and found it very difficult to understand.

As for individual contributions, I found that I had not done quite a good job to my group as I only do what I am told to do like posting a post or comment on the blog. I am not so ‘automatic’ like I would not do extra work, like I would not post a comment everyday but only post comments sometimes and would only do what I am supposed to do. But for the next few months, I would try my best to do my best in everything.

When we go to Fort Siloso to film our documentary there, we were unable to do so as it was raining heavily. We could not film because most of our scenes were supposed to be film outdoors, not indoors. So, we cannot film as we do not have a back-up plan. Instead of wasting our time there, we decided to film in the surrender chambers for the first scene. But it was quite dark there and there are alot of background noises, so we have to edit the clip to make it better by making the clip more brighter and muting the background noises.

Luckily, our school let us go to Fort Siloso again. Of course,it was much more better than the first trip as we were quite familiar with the surroundings there. Then we split ourselves into two groups; one to take photos and the other to film the video. We all managed to do finsh our required tasks on time successfully.

After this incident, I learnt that a back-up plan is important in any case of problems we encountered.

For research skills, I learnt that I cannot copy and paste the information given. Instead, I  should use the ‘PEEL’ method to answer the question. There are also two other useful methods we could use when doing our research; they are mindmapping and 5W1H. Mindmapping helps us to understand the topic better by summarizing the topic into different points in not more than three words.

For history skills, I learnt how to answer the question by infering the evidence from the source. I was informed that we should look out for details that is related to the question in order to answer them correctly. After looking out for the evidence, we should organized our answer properly and then write them out.

As for multiliteracies skills, I learnt how to take photos and videos using different angles and also learnt how to edit photos and videos. We need to use a program in the computer in order to edit the photos and videos.

After the lesson and the presentation by the other group, I think it is important to master the skill of the basic and applying the reasearch materials using different sources. As such , we will be able not only to have a easier time to do the work but also learnt to get a higher level of knowledge and computer skill.
Also, i had learnt on the importance of planning.I fel that the plannig was important after the trip.During the trip, problems surfaced because we had some errors in plan.I n addition, if we had not commited such errors, perhaps we might not had much problems liked the hassle to contact each other in the mist of fliming. As such , times was wasted and we also were unsure too.
Also, after thsi lessons , I had learnt on the skill of fliming a good video.Firstly , the contrast of the light miuch have an minimum amount.Noto nly that, the background must had a minimum extent of volume. For example , if it is too loud, it will affect the filiming progress because the nature and listening of the key pount are affected. Thus , many factors often results in a bad work.
As such , i think that it is important to apply the work and skills learnt to do a good work.

After the project work, I was quite overwrought and exhausted.Having loads of homework and trying to complete the homework in both ways are quite challenging and helpless too at times. However, from this, I was quite relieved then because i could still managed to handled the task but in a messy situation. At times, many problems surfaced like lacking of time or doing the work burning the midnight oil.
However, from this, I had also learnt on the importance of having a good time management. At times, I also felt that a timetable is important too.But ,due to too much homework, the timetable cannot be carried out then.I n addition, I think i would sort out my homework by doing the easiest homework to the most difficult homework.
I think a good time management is being firstly able to complete the homework in time. For the second factor, I think it is to manage and sort out the subjects and continued based on a personal selection. For example, if this student isweak in english, He/she could work in that first too.As such, he would had a balance of work and revision.
Thus, I ithink whatever it is, as long as one completes he/ her hmoework, i think that i have also learnt on how to do a work well and not to burn the midnight oil in order to performed the best job.

This year, I have learnt a lot of skills to improve my subjects better. For example, for History, I have learnt a skill to solve SBQ questions. The skill is,

P – main Point

E – Explain

E – Evidence

L – Link back to question

This skill help me answer the SBQ questions more better and let me focus more on the main point then evaluating on the unnecessary sentences. Thus, these skills help me do my history questions better.

Another skills I found that maybe helpful for my future use is mindmapping. Mindmapping is to start from a small topic and answer the 5W 1H that is What, Who, When, Why, Where and How. From this small topic I would make more evaluation by asking these 6 questions. In history, the most important question to ask is ‘Why’? By asking this question, you will know more about the topic. Thus, I will learn more stuff through these. This skill is also helpful when doing an English Composition. As from this, you will know how to elaborate more on the compo so that you audience understands. It also helps you to Show not Tell.

Thus, these are some of the skills I learnt that may be important in the future.

Topic: Problems encountered and attempts to solve these: what have you learned from this?

After having around 3 months of this project I have learnt a lot o things and I had learned the problems I have couldn’t be repeated. For example, I will try to finish this project and neglected by other homeworks. Thus, I have to burn midnight oil to finish all my homeworks. This makes me quite stress. But, after I learn to manage my day by making a timetable I do not have this same mistake again. Thus, now I need not stress about my day anymore.

<!–[if !supportEmptyParas]–> <!–[endif]–>Another problems I had faced was when during the 1st Fort Siloso trip. It was really very stressful. When we go there, it was raining heavily, thus, we could not do anything as all our scenes except the 1st one was suppose to filmed outdoors. So, we only manage to film our 1st scene. Which is also not good enough as there are background noises. Thus, now, I learnt that we had to have a Plan B just to make sure that we can finish our work in time and nothing is suppose to get in our way. So, I learnt that whatever I do, I need to have a Plan B so, it will not affect our project.

<!–[if !supportEmptyParas]–> <!–[endif]–>As people say, you will learn from our problems. Thus, by having all these problems, I learnt not to make these mistakes again and so, I would not have any regrets over the future.

Topic: Group and individual contributions to project.

After looking at the groups’ that had presented, i felt quite scared as they seemed nervous and my classmates had asked alot of hard questions. So, i am scared that when i presented, they will ask a lot of hard questions i would not understand. Thus, i had been recently reading up on the topic and i need to be ready.

But, i think the advantage of presenting later, is that, we can make the other groups mistake as a learning point for us. I saw a couple of mistakes in their presentation. For example, they did not make eye contact with the class. Some also talk too softly and some people would not understand. When i present later, I would try to project my voice. Another mistake is that they always read off the paper they printed. It was not good as, the lesson would be very boring.

As a self reflection, I think i had did pretty well, as a leader. But, I know i had a couple of mistakes as i did not post somethings as quickly as possible. Thus, i hope i can make it better. But, overall, i am proud of what my group had done.

For History skills, i had learnt the PEEL method.
P- main Point
E- Evidence
E- Explanation
L- Link back to question.
The 5Ws and 1H question is extremely useful for mindmapping. The hardest questions is the WHY question as the answerer must be able to elaborate on the answer and explain it well.

As for the research skills, it is important not to copy and paste the whole chunk of information. Instead we should summarize it. I also learnt how to take pictures from different angles and background.
i hope that everything can go on smoothly during our presentation.

The first visit to Fort Siloso was a letdown. Before we could carry on with the tour, it started to rain heavily. As a result of this, we were unable to carry on with the tour. We had to go to the surrender chambers (which at least was indoors) and we were actually waiting for the rain to stop. Our group members decided that instead of wasting time, we could flim the first scene at the surrender chambers. The scene was quite noisy and the lighting was terrible as it was quite dark. We had to redo our scripts and had to have a “backup” plan again in the event in actually rain again.
The second visit to Fort Siloso was definitely more successfully than the first as it did not rain and we were actually quite familiar with the surroundings already. We splitted ourselves into two groups: the photo taking group and the video taking group. The photo taking group consist of Wei Lian, Madeleine and I while the video taking group consist of Ayuni, Qi Hui and Brandon. The picture taking group go around taking important pictures of Fort Siloso while the video taking group takes videos.
We managed to finish our required work as we had stick to our tasks and maybe to the fact the it did not rain. I think that a backup plan is important as if there is no backup plan, time would be wasted. We also need to react quickly in case if our plan did not go as planned.

For research skills, history skills example like analysing sources, inferring, mindmapping, organising, questioning sources, multiliteracies skills such as planning a movie, shooting, scripting and storyboarding. I have learnt how to infer the source based questions through the PEEL method. Mindmapping also consists of only 3 words in a box. I have also learnt how to learn how to question sources using the 5Ws and 1H, I also learnt that the Why question is the hardest to answer.

I have also learnt how to film a movie through the different angles, distance and lighting. After the filming, I have also learnt how to edit a movie like mute the unwanted background noise. I have also learnt how to make a picture into black and white using desaturation and the hue option.

I hope that I can learn how to do all kinds of things to pictures to all types of image programs.

Reflection on: Group work and individual contributions to project (preparing for the presentation) March 30, 2008

After watching many groups presenting, I felt a little scared about the presentation my group is going to present. Scared because if my classmates may ask questions and I do not know the answer, so I must be prepared, know what I am going to talk about, have background information because I am the one who is presenting, besides Ayuni.

When watching the groups presenting, I noticed a few mistakes. They did not make eye – contact with us, the audience. Some were talking to softly thus they have to keep repeating what they have said. They also read from their scripts which makes it a little boring and until a while later, we are lost and we don’t know what they are talking about. They sometimes also don’t know what they are talking about themselves. (To those who are reading this, with the exception of Ms Lee, please don’t feel offended, these are mistakes you make and everyone makes mistakes)

For the individual contributions, I felt that I’ve done quite a fair share, even though there are others who don’t post as daily. I’ve posted discussions, comments, and of course, what Ayuni has asked me to do. I don’t do it just for the sake of doing as the end product is very lousy. I try my very best for posting very post. Whatever Ayuni has asked me do, I feel that I always hand it up on time. For the presentation on teaching the class, I hope that I am already prepared as I am the one presenting. I hope that other members in my group, besides Ayuni who’s presenting, they will know what to say, and because they will helping me and Ayuni go around the class and clarify the doubts and questions when the other groups have doubts or questions. Lastly, I hope that my group will done a good job for the presentation. Good luck!

I have had a few problems while doing the project work with this project, for instance deciphering of Lim Bo Seng’s letter, adding subtitles to the Elizabeth’s Choy video which is in letter and adding of the subtitles for the audio clip from a past survivor of the World War II in Singapore and some discussion problems like mindmaps and which pictures to take.

We had to discuss for awhile before we came to a point. Also, my group have helped me to decipher the letter and helped me to translate the Elizabeth Choy video from Chinese to English. We have also thought how to do the mindmap through the group’s choice. Because we have helped each other, we are able to score very high.

Through these times, there were a bit of quarrelling  but hopefully there was no fighting of any kind and I hope the discussions can be sometimes be a bit more calming.

For the project work, I believe that everyone in the group has a part to play or something to do. For I think that when 1 person does not contribute to the work designated to that person, the group will collapse and it will no longer be called a group, but an individualist. But when everyone contributes, everyone will benefit.

I have had a lot of fun working in the group even though everyone except me is a girl. I have begun to realise the pros of working in the group and cons of working individually. Example is Lim Bo Seng’s letter, without the help of the group; I would not have finish deciphering the letter in time for the group’s deadline.

I really hope to work again in a group in the future if there is a chance as my helpful group members made my experience very memorable to me.
